*For those in the Ottawa/Toronto region...* *Save the date!* *Share this information widely and encourage others to join! Support the continued quest for justice of the former "comfort women"!* *What?* Solidarity Demonstration for the 1000th Weekly Wednesday protest of the survivors of WWII Japanese Military Sexual Slavery in South Korea ~ the world's longest ongoing protest! *When?* Wednesday, December 14th *Where?*: Toronto/Ottawa *How to get there?* Buses will go from TO to Ottawa and back for a nominal fee of $20--you must pre-register by clicking here<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHc1bUVkeUpsZjhZTjFqdy0tV2l3cWc6MQ> *Details:* The Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan (Korean Council), the organization that has been supporting Korean and international surviving "comfort women" in their quest for justice and healing for more than two decades, is calling on those of us around the world to rise up and support the survivors on the occasion of the 1000th and final Weekly Wednesday Protest in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul. They will be installing a commemorative sculpture at the site of the protest, and are rallying to make a final strong effort towards pushing the Japanese government to meet the seven demands of the survivors, for which they have been demonstrating on the same spot since 1992. Until now, there has been no satisfactory official response by the Japanese government. Attached is a document produced by the Korean Council calling for support at this time, highlighting many possibilities for action. *How to support them in Canada*: The Korean-Canadian & Chinese-Canadian communities are mobilizing in response to the Korean Council's call for solidarity demonstrations, and we are calling upon women (and men!) of all backgrounds to step forward and show that this issue is not just an "ethnic" issue, but is an issue of social justice and human rights that is mirrored in the realities of violence against women around the world, in both situations of conflict and in the absence of war. * Let us show our solidarity with these courageous survivors, and by representing ourselves there as feminists and feminist allies resplendent in all our diversity, send the message both to the Japanese and Canadian governments that this issue matters to all of us.* If you wish to be kept in the loop as plans progress, please join our facebook group at:http://www.facebook.com/groups/1381555796253 You can also email Angela Lytle at info at learnwhr.org for additional information, or get in touch with Toronto ALPHA, the primary organizers of the demonstration: www.torontoalpha.org Again, you must pre-register if you plan to take the bus from Toronto to Ottawa and back with the group---follow this link<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHc1bUVkeUpsZjhZTjFqdy0tV2l3cWc6MQ> Note that a press conference will be held on Wed Nov 23 at the Korean Canadian Cultural Assocation at 10:30 am (Location: https://sites.google.com/site/torontokcca/) in solidarity, angela -- angela lytle executive director women's human rights education institute www.learnwhr.org info at learnwhr.org Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/learnwhr Find us on Twitter at LearnWHR

Hello all, I work at an academics-based women's centre on the U of T campus (the Centre for Women's Studies in Education). We're putting on a big (free) event that some of you might be interested in, and Olivia Chow has confirmed that she'll be speaking. It's a film screening and panel about the "comfort women" of the Second World War. The survivors have just had their 900th protest in Seoul outside the Japanese embassy last week (you can read about it in the Huffington Post here -- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-solis/surviving-comfort-women-r_b_422211.html).
