Nikon Cancels ‘Comfort Women’ Photo Exhibit

In the latest flare-up over Japan’s ongoing handling of Korean “comfort women” during World War II, Tokyo-based camera company Nikon Corp. has stirred controversy by cancelling a planned exhibit on the subject by a South Korean photographer.

Former “comfort women” during weekly protests outside the Japanese embassy in Seoul, South Korea.
The exhibit was to have been shown at the company’s Shinjuku salon from June 26 to July 9, and included photos of women who said they had been held as sexual slaves by the Japanese military in China in the 1930s and 1940s.

A spokeswoman for the photographer, Ahn Se-hong, said an official from Nikon called him last week and told him the exhibit would be cancelled, but did not give him any reason. The spokeswoman, Sadik Lee, told JRT that a Nikon official said they would like to meet Mr. Ahn in person to apologize, but he refused until he was given an explanation.

A Nikon spokesman, who declined to be named, confirmed the cancellation, and told JRT that “considering various circumstances in a comprehensive way, we have come to decide to cancel it. This is all we can say.”

The spokesman wouldn’t elaborate, but did confirm Japanese press reports of protests that Nikon received against the planned exhibit. The Asahi Shimbun reported that several complaints surfaced on the Internet, branding the exhibit a “betrayal” of Japan, and calling for protests of the exhibit.

The cancellation comes after a controversy earlier this month in Palisades Park, N.J., when Japanese government officials and lawmakers tried to persuade the community to take down a monument in the town, which has a large population of Korean descent, dedicated to the memory of comfort women. The town refused and the resulting publicity has prompted more American cities to consider such monuments.

Mr. Ahn also seems determined not to let the matter of his exhibit fade quietly. Ms. Lee said he cannot accept cancellation and is demanding that Nikon go ahead with the original plans.

If they hadn’t cancelled, the exhibit would have gone on with no international press certainly not from WSJ. By cancelling, I know not to buy NIkon products. But I’m not buying ANY Japanese owned products including Philips and Madame Alexander dolls. All my multi region dvd players are from OPPO out of California.

Fifty years from now, I can bet my 2 cents that these people will be coming out in droves to claim that they had been brought there against their will and were made to serve as “comfort women” by the evil westerners and start demanding for an apology and compensation.

Ahn Se-hong should put the entire exhibit on a webpage so we can all get a look at it since NIkon has given him all this free press.

Very Cruel to do this to the victims. And Tone Deaf besides. Interesting.

Nikon has every right to cancel the exhibit on the comfort women. Is it the right/moral thing to do? No, but considering the already tense atmosphere between Japan and Korea, do they need something else to stir up more contraversy or negative publicity? Probably not.

I am Vietnamese-American, do you hear me complaining about American GI’s raping our women? I don’t appreciate it being part of our culture’s history, but it’s up to us today to prevent women and children from being exploited in the future in situations like these where in war, women and children are abused and exploited.

As for me, Generation X, Japanese nationality living in Japan, here is what I have been told or have learnt:
1. Comfort Women did exist.
2. Half were either Chinese(Manchuria) or Korean origin, Japanese invaded areas.
3. “Many” have volunteered to become prostitutes. It was not Illegal back then.
4. “Many” were sold by their parents as it was quite natural to have big family in poor areas, probably happened not just in China or Korea but also in Japan as well
5. “Many” may have been abducted from their families or tricked into being a comfort women, where this is the point in the argument.
6. There were no ways for comfort women to go to military controlled areas so the Military organized the logistics.
7. The military did not out law comfort women system. As in point 5, they knew there was sexual act done by comfort woman and have asked for a setup in remote areas.
8. “Some” comfort women may have been paid in military issued bonds
9. “many” soldiers(ancestors) have bought comfort women, “some” have not
10. DId Japanese military tried to solve these abduction issue? Probably not. Did they know where and how they came, probably not.
11. So was it public or government(military) ran? Does not really matter for non-Japanese but this is the point where all thinking stops for Japanese.
So when I hear “Military Sex Slave” I have to wonder what is meant for and why they advertise as is. Clearly above point is not humane in today’s standards and most would agree that in modern day Japan.
Was there a military, involvement? Yes, there was and there was negligence and past prime ministers have apologized in public speeches. Was it proper? Probably not as it is not to the point that Korean victims want to hear and also the government’s thinking stops at point 11.
For me, I am not sure what is fair for these victims. Execution of Tokyo Tribunal is not realistic to these people. Unless above all points are advertised liked the holocaust, like “every one of comfort women” were sex slaves they will most likely never feel right. There were public fund setup in Japan to pay back to these victims but it was not government owned, only directed by government.
In the real world, in Japan, it is not discussed in public (as Japanese do not openly discuss political issues) but some what people are still trying to understand what had really happened. We can freely learn from left or the right side people but the Japanese have not come to a common consensus, and what I know may be wildly biased as well.
So this is what I know and have learned in the past. I do not know who is to blame, the nation, people or history but I feel it will never be “solved” as it is already not about what it is but what it should be.

I believe that the documentary participants – the Osakan hookers were being honest about how many men they serviced before they got off work and hung out in “THe Great Happiness Space” but the Japanese Army had to guard these gangrape victims known as Comfort Women from escaping and the woman and girls were damaged so thoroughly that they were definitely tortured and raped to death or near death such that many became infertile AND incontinent suffering internal organ injuries. Not only were they bayoneted and burned and choked during the rapes but unlike the JAPANESE who actually volunteered to be hookers, they had NO paperwork like the kind that China found for a Kristi Yamaguchi lookalike.

I think it is cruel of people who learned of the comfort women in Japanese schools to (1) use the fact that they know about is a a defense and denial and a propagation of the party line denial but also to refuse to acknowledge how absolutely gross it is to be gangraped for every waking second of your life because your people had the temerity to be taller, straighter and more Confucian than your attackers. This was a punishment upon the woman of China and Korea for being goody goodies.

The fact that postwar Japanese see strangely blatant Korean massage parlors and newspaper ads offering services as a satisfaction and a clearance for genuine organized sex crimes is telling about the true character of postwar Japanese. But why should we argue, we should just leave you alone with the North Koreans so we can be honest with each other, You had your turn, wait for theirs.

OK, I get your point. They were gang raped victims, especially those who were taken against their will. No question about that. It is also true that many Japanese, especially those right wing people, do not go further then the punch line about military involvement. The argument usually stops there because the approach of the point of view starts from 2 different points. In a way, it does show how Japanese, especially male are in-affectionate and can’t put their feet in other’s shoes and view from the other side.
But I think you are wrong that people in Japan do not feel that gang rape is gross. There is no denying of this.
I do feel for those who were victimized by the war by my countrymen and probably so does many that live in this country. And there may be a lack of teaching feelings of being a such rape victims but I think people here also think gang rape is gross. It is unfair for people to put it as “ALL Japanese are ex-gang rapers” and “still are gang rapers” because there still is illegal prostitution in Japan.

Reuters
