During World War II an estimated 200,000 women, mostly Korean, were forced by the Japanese into sexual slavery. This experience scarred the women, who hid their shame in silence. Now in their sixties and seventies, the surviving women have dared to speak of their suffering at the hands of their Japanese oppressors.

This film captures the spirit and spunk of a group of survivors who live together in a sharing community. Amidst the activities of everyday life, they laugh, voice their tough minded views, and care intensely for one another. One of the women, dying of cancer, expresses her past in boldly colored paintings.

Habitual Sadness is a reminder of women's vulnerability during war. It is also a testament to the strength of former victims who have exchanged their painful memories for the warmth of communal life.

"The victims do not look like they are weak. They look powerful. I think that is the spe- cial thing of my documentary." - Byun Young-Joo, director

HABITUAL SADNESS
Young-Joo Byun | South Korea | 1997 | 71 min. | Documentary | Colour | 35mm

category: Voices of Women
synopsis:
In World War II Japan forced many South Korean girls into sexual slavery. Known as "comfort woman," they were abducted as teenagers and shipped off to the front to service as many as 30 troopers a day. In 1991, some of them began testifying about their experiences. Byun Young-Joo worked with such women for two years on her previous film The Murmuring, a documentary which broke nearly a half century of silence on the subject and was screened at the Amnesty International Film Festival in 1996. A "sharing house" was then established for former comfort women and provided the setting for Habitual Sadness, a documentary showing the enduring wounds but strong spirit of these women. "During our time together, these women slowly grew more comfortable and eventually even bold in front of the camera. As I watched them change, I felt as much joy as sadness, a habitual sadness that is always weighing on our lives," said the director. Habitual Sadness was a major success in South Korea and a hit at the Hong Kong Film Festival.

Director´s Note: "What could be more frightening to a person who suddenly reveals herself to the world after fifty years of shame and silence, than to have people forget that determination, as if to tell you not to dare dream that all your hard-found courage could change the world? Myself, I wanted only to express one thing: Let us not forget. We cannot forget. It is with these words of resolution that I repay what these women have helped me learn over the last five years."

Now she is the head of "Vista", a documentary film production group. She made her directorial debut in 1993 with the video work A Woman-being in Asia, which documents the situation of a "Geisha tour" in Cheju Island. While shooting this film, she met a woman prostituting to pay for her mother´s medical care, who suffered from the experiences as a comfort woman during WWII. Realizing that this issue was still affecting the lives of Korean women today, she set out to film The Murmuring (1995), the first of the "Harumoni" trilogy with Habitual Sadness (1997) and the now-in-production My Own Breathing.

< Na-jeun Moak-so-li 2 >
The story of the women at the "House of Sharing" continues. Old women who share a common bond lead a peaceful life in the countryside, raising vegetables, chickens and painting pictures. They are no different from the elderly women we see every day. But they are all scarred by pain and sorrow from their collective history of being comfort women during World War 2. They became subject to prejudice in their own homeland after their return to Korea. It is painful for t... full story

Director's Statement

Habitual sadness. Why does sadness become habitual? These dear woman, harumoni, play a much more active role in this film than the one before. In casually pointing out certain scenes to be included, they decided on the content of the film even before I did. Their exaggerated acting some times embarrassed even myself. While intently watching these dear woman, I did not feel happiness but sadness. Like shackles binding their arms I felt this habitual sadness, and it wasn't just because I remembered the reality that they were hauled away and used as comfort woman by the Japanese Army.

As soon as Kang Dok-yung realized her lifetime was limited, she feared nothing more than being forgotten. Like many woman who have lived in silence for the past fifty years, the thing she feared most when she revealed to the world that she had been a comfort woman, was that the courage it had taken to give out her name when so frightened would be pushed aside and once again forgotten. It's her dream that in coming forth she could have an effect on the world.

Perhaps this is the source of the sadness we habitually feel in our daily lives as woman. Habitual Sadness is not my film. All I did was gather together what these woman wanted to show to world-their discussions and everyday lives. The one thing, however, that I would like to strongly emphasize is my determination of not to forget, perhaps unable to forget them. I think this determination is the only way that I can fulfill my gratitude, for these dear women that has given me the strength these past 5 years to learn about the world.

국제적으로도, 일본의 부정에도 불구하고, UN과 ILO(International Labor Organization, 국제노동기구) 같은 국제기구들의 다양한 노력은 지속되고 있다.
